The 4-4-2 was a muscle car produced by the Oldsmobile division of General Motors, first as an option package on the F-85 and Cutlass models. It became its own model in 1968, only to revert back to an option in 1971. Oldsmobile also revived the name for a rear-wheel drive Cutlass Supreme in the 1980’s and front-wheel drive Cutlass Calais in the 1990’s, after the line had been discontinued in 1980. A four barrel-carburetor, a four-speed transmission, and a dual exhausts are what gave the iconic muscle car its “4-4-2” name. The cars had some serious power, at 345hp. The 4-4-2 would become an icon of American muscle and the hay days of Oldsmobile. It provided stiff competition for Ford muscle and pony cars.
