15. Ford Taurus

In an effort to compete with the economical Japanese cars that were dominating the market, Ford released the Taurus in 1986. The Taurus marked Ford’s transition to front wheel drive vehicles and was the start of new quality standards for Ford. The aerodynamic design allowed the Taurus to achieve better gas mileage than Ford’s other models and lead to an American automobile design revolution. With the Taurus’s success, Chrysler and General Motors developed aerodynamic cars to try and mimic what Ford had done. The creation of the Taurus saved Ford during a time when they were losing out to the Japanese cars. The Taurus remains a popular Ford model to this day and has seen a number of generation changes over the last 30 years. Ford even has a special edition SHO model built for power and performance.
