The 1964/1965 Mustang was the car that started it all. With the Mustangs introduction, a new class of car was born, known as the pony car. The styling proved immensely popular and inspired a number of imitators. When designing the Mustang, the design team was given five goals to strive for. The vehicle needed to be able to seat four, have bucket seats and a floor mounted shifter, weigh no more than 2,500 pounds, sell for less than $2,500, and have multiple power, comfort, and luxury options. In order to decrease development costs, Ford used various components from their Falcon and Fairlane models. The Mustang Debuted five months before the normal start of the 1965 production year, leading to enthusiasts to refer to the first Mustangs as 1964 ½  models. The Mustang gained popularity and remains one of Ford’s most iconic vehicles of all time.
