7. Nevada Was the First U.S. State to Allow Driverless Cars on the Public Roads

Most consumers do not realize that California was not the first U.S. state to allow self-driving automobiles on the public roads. Nevada was the first state to do so, granting a “testing” license for Google to use their driverless automobiles on the state’s roadways. This law was passed on March 1st, 2012. Florida was the second state to pass legislation for the testing of self-driving autos, while California was the third state to allow the vehicles on the roadways with Michigan not too far behind as the fourth state to allow the vehicles. Abroad, the United Kingdom passed legislation permitting testing of the vehicles on public roads, while France is allowing the same on 2,000 KM of roadways beginning in 2015. As the technology for self-driving cars continues to mature, expect to see the rate of approval across both the U.S. and overseas to continue to increase.
