3. Rust-Proofing

Over the past decade, the need to pay for additional rust-proofing of new automobiles has just about gone away. Auto manufacturers now apply rust proofing technology to the sealants and paints applied to new vehicles, and several will even void the factory warranty against corrosion if a third-party solution is applied to the auto. Depending on the automobile, this “upgrade” can cost consumers up to $1250. In an attempt to encourage shoppers to get rust-proofing, some dealerships will include the option in a special “environmental” package that also includes fabric protection and / or special paint sealant. There is little upside to paying for the upgrade since the odds are that the vehicle will enjoy the same or better protection than rust-proofing will provide.
