4. Don’t Be Afraid of Private Sellers

When you’re shopping for a used car, you have two options: You can visit a dealership, or you can find a private seller. Dealers are convenient, but a private seller will always give you a better deal. In general, you can expect to see a markup of around $2,000 when you buy a car from a dealership.

Dealers are also professional salesmen, which means buying from them will come with a lot of added pressure. A private seller is more likely to be honest with you and much more open to negotiation. In many cases, a private seller will be so happy to see money in his pocket that he’ll let you drive away with a very good deal.

If you do opt for a private seller, be smart. Bring a friend with you and, if possible, meet somewhere public like a parking lot rather than driving out to the seller’s home. Pay in cash, and don’t leave unless you have the title in your hand. These simple measures will reduce any potential danger and maximize your chances of finding a great car at the best possible price.
