7. Find Out if Your Car Insurance Covers the Rental

Every car rental agency will offer to sell you insurance coverage through their agency at the counter. Before arrival, consumers should take the time to check with their primary auto insurer to see if the company will cover the rental vehicle. Although coverages can vary significantly, if you hold full insurance on your private vehicle, the odds are that you will be covered at the counter. As a general rule, most policies will extend an equivalent coverage to your rental car. For example, if you have full coverage on your own car, you should also have full coverage on the rental agency’s vehicle. This extension will also include models of vehicle that are worth more than your personal vehicle; however, you should always confirm coverage before making a potentially costly assumption.
