One of the most disappointing partnerships in the late 1980s was that between Lee Iacocca (chairman) and Chrysler and Alejandro de Tomaso (president) and Maserati. The teamed up to create the Chrysler TC by Maserati auto that was a significant disappointment from the start. The 1989 edition of the auto did feature a 2.2 liter, turbo-charged V-4 engine that used a Maserati-designed 16-valve cylinder head. The engine was rated at 200 horsepower, and later in the initial production year a five-speed Getrag manual transmission was added to the vehicle to improve performance in that area for the vehicle. For the past two years the auto was in production, Chrysler would shift to a Mitsubishi-designed and built V-6 engine; however, this would not help the TC as only 7,000 models were sold over the three years the car was in production.
