11. Watch the Speed Limit

One of the biggest mistakes made by drivers trying to survive driving in Alaska is failing to observe the posted speed limit. Many times, the state will determine that the appropriate limit on many of the state, local, and federal highways is 10 to 20 miles-per-hour slower than what one may find in other states. This is often due to one of two factors: 1 – The preponderance of wildlife in the region that you are driving, or 2 – The conditions the roadway gets in during bad weather. No matter what, a good rule of thumb to follow to survive driving in Alaska is to never exceed the posted speed limit during the winter time. This will not only keep one safe, but helps guard against the unforeseen that can commonly arise in Alaska.
