12. Mitsubishi Mirage

The Mitsubishi Mirage scored “poor” in the small overlap front test, earning it a low overall safety score. Driver space was not well maintained, with lower interior intrusion of 26 cm, and upper intrusion of 19 cm at the hinge pillar and instrument panel. The door sill was pushed laterally towards the driver 11 cm. According to measurements taken from the dummy, injuries to the left lower leg would be likely and injuries to the left knee would be possible. All other body regions had a low risk of injury. The dummy’s head barely contacted the frontal airbag before sliding off the left side as the steering column moved 14 cm to the right, leaving the head vulnerable to contact with forward side structure. The seat belt allowed excessive forward excursion of the dummy’s head and torso. The side curtain airbag deployed but does not have sufficient forward coverage to protect the head from contact with forward side structure and outside objects, and the driver’s seat tipped forward and toward the B-pillar.
