The Beetle has become a legend, for many reasons. The production started in 1938, and ended in 2003, and over that period, more than 21,000,000 Beetles have been made. The beetle started off as “the people’s car” in Nazi Germany, but later it became one of the most popular cars worldwide.

It was not only about its quality (as you know, it was developed by Ferdinand Porsche); it was also about its simplicity, durability, as well as its classical touch. People all over the world loved it, and most owners were so happy with their Beetles, that they never sold them.

During the Hippie era, the Beetle was also very popular, and you could see some very flowery designs. Even though it looked funny on the road next to large American cars, it still kept it charms. Jose Mujica, the former president of Uruguay, has been driving his Beetle for years.

Millions of people swear it has made their lives easier, just for being durable and undemanding when it came to maintenance. A few of them will also have a romantic or funny story that includes the Beetle. The day when the production stopped was a historical day; the last edition counted 3,000 cars available in beige or aqua-blue. The last car of this edition was produced in Mexico, and sent to Germany, to the VW museum.
