The 1955 Chrysler (Ghia) Streamline X “Gilda” is similar to other autos from the 1950s that feature fins and was originally designed to be powered by a jet turbine engine. Oddly, the vehicle’s name came from one of Rita Hayworth’s movies from 1946, and the car was designed by Italian, Giovanni Savonuzzi of Ghia Coachbuilding. When the original jet turbine engine did not work out, the company swapped it out with a basic 1.5 liter engine so that the vehicle could be used for touring around vice waiting on the issues with the propulsion being worked out permanently. The car was debuted at the 1955 Turin ‘Salone dell’Automobile,’ and it is credited with providing the foundation for the ‘Forward Look” design language and other Chrysler production cars that would be made later in the 1950s and 1960s.
